League 1 Manager of the Month nominations: August

The arrival of September means we are already one month into the new season and it has been a great start to the season across the Football League. Several clubs have hit the ground running in League 2 but which four managers have been shortlisted for the first Manager of the Month award of the season.

Nigel Adkins – Sheffield United

The pressure has been on Adkins from the day he stepped through the door at Bramall Lane. To some Sheffield United have been a sleeping giant in League One for too long now and promotion this season is a must. So when they were played off the park by Gillingham, 4-0, on the opening day people were already rushing to question the former Southampton and Reading manager. However four wins in a row later and second in the table has got things right back on track for the Blades.

Justin Edinburgh – Gillingham

Since coming into the club in February, Edinburgh has enjoyed success after success. That continued at the start of this season and in some style. The 4-0 win over Sheffield United put a marker down and with two further wins and two draws in their subsequent four league games, the Gills are unbeaten after the first month of the season. Sitting pretty in fourth, two points behind the leaders, an exciting season could lay in wait for Gillingham.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – Burton Albion

The winning formula for Hasselbaink and his Burton side has carried on in League One after gaining promotion last season. Four wins by a single goal margin in the opening month coming against Blackpool, Scunthorpe, Peterborough and Shrewsbury has put the League One new boys third in the table with the only dot on their card coming against Barnsley.

Dean Smith – Walsall

Not many would have predicted Walsall as table toppers after the first month of the season, but credit to Smith and his players. After an opening day draw against Oldham, the Saddlers have been ruthless in their play winning their other four league matches. With 11 goals scored and just three conceded, Smith has found a winning formula and to net six goals in two away games is some going to say the least.

The winner of the Player and Manager of the Month awards for August will be revealed on Friday.
