Former Liverpool winger joins Charlton on trial

The Daily Mail have reported that 32 year-old attacker Jermaine Pennant has joined Charlton on trial with the view of earning a contract at the Valley after rejected a new deal with Wigan.

Vastly experienced, Pennant is currently a free agent after playing for Wigan last season but rejected a new contract after the Latics suffered relegation to League One.

Pennant has played for 12 different clubs during his career. After starting out with Notts County back in 1998, the former England U21 international joined Arsenal for a fee of £2 million.

In six years with the Gunners, although he was part of the squad that won the FA Community Shield in 2004, Pennant managed to net just three goals (which came in one game v Southampton) in 26 appearances, leading to his sale to Birmingham in 2005.

Two seasons with the Blues preceded a move to Liverpool for £6.7 million, where Pennant would stay for three years racking up over 80 appearances.

Pennant won the second Community Shield of his career in 2006 with the Reds and was also part of the squad that got the to final of the Champions League in 2007.

A single season in Spain with Real Zaragoza was blighted by training issues with the winger being reprimanded for turning up late three times in just two weeks.

Pennant moved back to England to play in the Premier League for Stoke in 2010 and spent four seasons with the Potters, finishing runners-up in the FA Cup in 2011, before moving to India for a short spell with Pune City.
