Experienced winger signs as Latics bolster their midfield

30 year-old forward Mark Yeates has joined Oldham Athletic on a short-term contract following his release from Bradford at the end of last season.

The former Bradford City player has joined after impressing during a week of training with the squad. Although initially only signing on a short-term contract, Yeates expressed his desire to stay for longer, telling the Oldham Athletic official website that ‘the plan is to make it into a longer term stay. With the new stand, the club is trying to push on. If you look at the group, with the players in there a lot of clubs will realise Oldham are in with a real big shout this season.’

With over 300 games to his name, many of which played in the Championship, the 30 year old brings with him a wealth of experience and quality, admitting that “anywhere I have played I have tried to get on the ball and make things happen”. Most recently, Yeates scored the fourth in Bradford’s infamous shock defeat of Chelsea. While Oldham’s main search has to be a centre forward after the loss of key man Jake Cassidy, Yeates’ acquisition has been met with applause from the Oldham faithful as he joins a midfield already full of quality. Latics have struggled to score goals so far this season and while many have put that down to Cassidy’s injury, it will be hoped that Yeates’ creativity can unlock the doors which have remained shut for Oldham.

The club have admitted that players will have to leave before any more join, so the next transfer activity at Boundary Park looks set to be an outgoing. Nevertheless it is refreshing for Oldham fans to be signing players who have games under their belt as opposed to a clutch of inexperienced Premier League loanees. After a steady start, hopefully Yeates will be the catalyst for an increase in goals and excitement at Boundary Park.
