Young striker snubs Sheffield Wednesday to join Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town have confirmed the signing of James Alabi on their official website with the 20 year-old having turned down an offer from fellow Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.

The Tractor Boys are currently topping the Championship table with three wins and one draw from their opening four games but boss Mick McCarthy is still adding to the squad with the arrival of free agent Alabi.

Formerly with Stoke’s academy, the London-born forward had been on trial at Portman Road for the past two weeks and has impressed sufficiently to earn a one year contract, with the option of a further year.

Although the youngster never made a senior appearance for the Potters, Alabi had loan spells in League One, League Two, and in the Conference between 2012 and 2015.

In an interview with Ipswich’s website, Alabi was keen to show his determination to keep impressing with the East Anglian club:

“The trial has gone well. I just got my head down and showed the manager what I can do. I see this at the start of my career now. I don’t think I have really had the opportunities at other clubs but the manager here has told me to come in, work hard and we will see what happens.
“I was offered something at Sheffield Wednesday but I knew Ipswich were interested in having a look at me and I’m delighted to have got a contract sorted. Now it’s up to me to impress Mick McCarthy.”
