League 2 Midweek Preview

Barnet v Northampton

Barnet have not made the best of starts following their return to the Football League after a two year exile. The North London club are only one of four League 2 teams to lose both of their opening matches, and they sit 23rd after conceding four and failing to net one of their own as yet. However, the Bees have hardly faced a simple opening run of matches; first up was recently relegated Leyton Orient followed by last season’s play-off finalists, Wycombe – both matches ended in 2-0 defeats. A 2-1 win over Millwall last Tuesday showed that Barnet do have what it takes to be a force in the League’s basement division and they will be hoping to kickstart their season at home to Northampton today.

This is unlikely to be a straightforward task however. Northampton have made a blistering start to the season, win three wins in all competitions, seven goals and none conceded. Manager Chris Wilder made a number of shrewd additions over the summer, the likes of Nicky Adams, Alfie Potter and David Buchanan all joining, and so far these signing have paid off handsomely. Two wins in the league, 1-0 away at Bristol Rovers and 3-0 at home against Exeter, have put the Cobblers in 4th place, and Northampton will be confident of a third straight league success tonight.

There is quite a lot of history between these two sides – Northampton were in fact the team who sent Barnet down in the 2012/2013 season whilst the same season saw the Cobblers lose 4-0 at Underhill. Expect a close and feisty affair.
