Portsmouth midfielder Ben Close has signed a new one-year-deal following his impressive performance in last night’s Derby giant-killing.
Close has risen through the academy on the South Coast and was brought into the first-team squad last season and has been promised more game time by Paul Cook.
The 19-year-old only signed an extension in the summer but his deal would have expired next summer. The youngster has amassed ten appearances so far in his Pompey career.
Although he has signed a new contract, Close is viewed as a squad player by Cook, who told the Portsmouth News:
“These lads are good players so we will give one or two from around the squad an opportunity because we think it’s right.”
Pompey travel to Plymouth in the Dockyard Derby on Saturday.
