Jones Still Has Part to Play at Pompey

Portsmouth goalkeeper Paul Jones has been told he is still part of Paul Cook’s promotion masterplan despite being dropped for Saturday’s curtain raiser against Dagenham and Redbridge.

Jones was an ever-present last season for Pompey and won over the fans with a series of impressive performances but new signing Brian Murphy has ousted him in the starting line-up.

Murphy was signed just one hour before kick-off until January, being the surprise choice for Cook’s man between between the sticks in the 3-0 victory. Jones’ omission ended his 173 consecutive spell in competitive matches but Cook told the Portsmouth News:

“Paul will get other opportunities but Brian has signed and come in and that is what I want, I want competition for players. I do think we have two top keepers at the club at the minute and I like them both.”

While it was Murphy’s first appearance in the Football League since he turned out for QPR in March 2014, he may now be able to stake a claim as Pompey’s new number one.

Both Jones and Murphy have a chance to impress against Derby in the League Cup on Wednesday in a match where Pompey’s keeper is set to be kept busy.
