League One – sportsmanship isn’t dead

Too often you get players rolling around on the floor like they’ve been shot from a sniper rifle, clutching every part of their body as if they are trying to hold everything together. It’s embarrassing, we’ve all seen it, it just looks wrong. It’s made even worse when some blasé commentators simply excuse it by saying something akin to “Oh well it’s simply a part of the modern game.” That dismissal leaves a sickly taste in the back of my throat and makes me want to throw my TV through the window, or on the fire. It seems that bad sportsmanship is either excused or implicitly rewarded by ignoring it.

Hallelujah for Doncaster Rovers, that’s all I can say. In Saturday’s game against Bury, Doncaster scored inadvertently whilst playing the ball back to the Bury keeper. This came after Donny midfielder Harry Forrester tried to return the ball to Bury keeper Christian Walton who had knocked it out of play following an injury to a Doncaster Rovers player. The ball was hit a smidge too hard and sailed over Walton and bounced into the Bury net.

Then Doncaster manager Paul Dickov instructed his players to allow this to happen.

Quoted in the Guardian, Bury manager Dave Flitcroft said,

“I’ve got the ultimate respect for Paul Dickov. He tried to get the referee to award a foul throw initially but then he’s allowed us to score from the restart. Paul put football into a good place with his sportsmanship today because if you lose morality the game has no substance for me.” Dave Flitcroft – The Guardian: August 8, 2015

Now that’s true sportsmanship.mo
