PREVIEW: Tangerines face tough opener against the U’s

Colchester United begin their Sky Bet League One campaign at home to recently relegated Blackpool FC.

Colchester had a superb pre-season by only losing two of their seven pre-season matches. The U’s started their Pre-Season Schedule three away trips to Non-League sides. Firstly they had a trip to Heybridge where the eased past the Swifts with an 8-0 win, this was followed up with a 4-0 win over Brentwood Town. Next was a game with a closer scoreline as the U’s travelled to Bishop’s Stortford and that match ended 3-2.

Next up for the U’s was a match at the Weston Holmes Community Stadium against a young West Ham side. Colchester came away as 1-0 winners courtesy of a winner from George Moncur in the thirteenth minute.

This was then followed by a 3-0 loss at the Weston Homes Community Stadium to Leyton Orient in front of a crowd of 1,084 on Saturday 25th July 2015. They then beat a full-strength Ipswich Town team that featured Darren Ambrose before signing for the U’s the U’s latest signing Darren Ambrose. On August 1st. Colchester hosted a friendly with a Fulham XI with whom the U’s lost 1-0 too.

Previous Meetings:

The two teams have met a total of thirty times in the league, their first meeting was in 1978/79 season in the English Division Three. That time the U’s ran away 3-1 winners, their most recent encounter was in the 2007/08 season when they were both in the English Championship. The U’s lost at home 2-0 back then.

Darren Ambrose is one of seven players who could all make a debut appearance for the U’s.

Despite having limited pre-season time, George Elokobi and Drey Wright have been included in Tony Humes’ team vs Blackpool.

Tangerine’s midfielder John Herron is out of the opener after suffering a knee problem.
