Cool Hand Luke returns to training

As he steps up his recovery from a pre-season knee injury, Luke Murphy returns to first team training at Leeds United’s Thorp Arch complex. After twisting his knee on the training pitch, Murphy missed all five of Leeds United’s pre-season games and underwent a minor procedure. Speaking of Murphy, and fellow injured midfielder Tommaso Bianchi, head coach Uwe Rösler said, “The good news is that Luke Murphy has trained again for the first time today with the first team. He has a little bit to go in terms of match practice but what a good day that is for us that he’s already back in training. He’s slightly ahead of schedule.” Whilst Murphy is back in training, Bianchi is a little further back in his recuperation, Rösler saying of the Italian, “He’s home and he starts his rehabilitation on Monday.”

Credit il Capo for taking a ‘back seat’

One of the major criticisms that faced Massimo Cellino is that he wore his heart on his sleeve and his anger in his mouth when he took over at Leeds United. However, after a tumultuous first season in charge that saw four managers (three in-season) and court cases leading to his temporary removal from running the club, things seem to have settled down at Elland Road. As Phil Hay says in his piece in the Yorkshire Evening Post “The past three months have been everything that the close season of 2014 was not and an answer to much of what incited criticism of Cellino.” Once refusing to appoint a chief executive, seeing himself as the only executive the club needed, Cellino ceded this bit of control in the appointment of Adam Pearson, an appointment that the Leeds owner says has made him “happy”. This taking of a ‘back seat’ allows Leeds United to be the focus of attention and not the man that owns the club.
