The Football League in 1000 years – who is the most successful club?

The league table is something that is vital to any footballing competition. A 46-game season ends up deciding who goes up and down and sets the bragging rights between fans, for another 12 months at least, but who will have the bragging rights in 1000 years?

Now obviously it’s difficult to predict who will be the most successful club in 10 centuries time, but if the game ‘Football Manager 2015’ is anything to go by, there will be some serious changes on the way. As highlighted by this article found on The News Hub, one Reddit user decided to skip the game to the year 3015 to find out who comes out on top.

Starting on March 4th 2015, the player left the game ‘on holiday’ to complete the simming process, and it took a grand total of 58 days to do so. At the end of it, the results were in and a number of Football League clubs became footballing powerhouses.

The best club would be decided by a scoring system, this system worked like this:

Premier League 1st Place- 5 points
Premier League 2nd Place- 3 points
Premier League 3rd Place- 1 point
FA Cup Win- 5 points
FA Cup Runner-Up- 2 points
League Cup Win- 4 points
League Cup Runner-Up- 1 point
Champions League Win- 6 points
Champions League Runner-Up- 3 points
Europa League Win- 4 points
Europa League Runner-Up- 1.5 points
So which Football League sides saw the most success? Let’s start off by looking at Premier League titles. Sheffield United lifted the trophy on 167 occasions, Burnley came behind them on 138 titles and in third place was Barnsley who finished first a grand total of 93 times.
Not only did the Premier League bring glory to these three sides, but so to did Europe’s top competition, the Champions League. Sheffield United again saw the most titles with 30, Burnley and Barnsley featured in the top 4, being joined by Arsenal.
Good news if you’re a Southend United supporter, not only can you celebrate promotion from League Two recently but you should look forward to a fantastic future. Your side go onto win the Premier League on 87 occasions, and lift the Champions League trophy 32 times.
Plymouth Argyle fan? Don’t worry, you’ll soon be out of League Two and more successful that Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea! Enjoying 778 seasons of Premier League football along the way.
Bad news however, if you support Leeds United. That desire and desperation for Premier League football will become even rarer than it currently is, as The Whites feature just five times in England’s top league in the next 1000 seasons.
Despite a number of League Two sides hitting the big time, not all make it. York City, Yeovil Town and Mansfield Town are just three examples of those who failed to make it to the Premier League, Wigan and Millwall are two examples from League One who also fail to do so.
In the end, Sheffield United take away the title of ‘most successful team’, scoring an impressive 2752.5 on the system. In second place is Burnley who fell just short on 2749.5 and in third is Southend United who scored 1914.5.
To find out where your team is, and see the entire league for how it is, the full database spreadsheet can be viewed here. Despite it only being a game simulation, could these teams transfer the virtual world into reality and deliver the success that they have been predicted as achieving?
