Middlesbrough beat Birmingham to signing of Diego Fabbrini

The Watford Observer have today reported that Middlesbrough have completed the season-long loan signing of Watford’s midfielder Diego Fabbrini after beating fellow Championship side Birmingham to his signature.

Fabbrini has been with the Hornets since 2013 but made just two appearances last season for the Golden Boys and spent part of the season on loan at both Millwall and Birmingham City.

The 24 year-old, who gained his one and only cap for Italy in 2012, started his career with Serie A side Empoli before moving to Udinese in 2011 in a deal worth about £2 million.

In 2013 Fabbrini was one of seven Udinese players to make the switch to English football but has failed to fit in at Vicarage Road and spent half of the 2013-14 season on loan with Serie B outfit Siena.

Birmingham boss Gary Rowett last week had spoken about his admiration of the player and his desire to bring the midfielder to St Andrew’s, but has lost out to Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough.
