Middlesbrough to make £14m bid for Rovers striker

Middlesbrough are set to make a £14 million move for Blackburn Rover striker Jordan Rhodes, according to the Daily Mail.

The fee would be the largest in Championship history, dwarfing the £11 million spent by Fulham on Ross McCormack last season. It would be an upfront payment of £9 million rising to the £14 million with performance-based add-ons.

Rovers owners The Venkys are looking to recuperate the £8 million they spent on Rhodes back in 2012 and could also see a substantial profit should he perform well at the Riverside.

The Scottish forward has been prolific for Rovers, scoring 74 goals in 143 games and managing at least 20 goals per season. He burst onto the scene back in 2009, recording three very successful seasons with Huddersfield Town, grabbing 87 goals in 148 outings.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka is keen to add a consistent goalscorer after losing out on Patrick Bamford to Premier League side Crystal Palace and seeing Jelle Vossen join Championship rivals Burnley. Karanka will hope that Rhodes can fire Middlesbrough back into the Premier League for the first time since 2009.

A transfer would also benefit the 25-year-old’s former club too, as the Terriers would will receive 20% of any profit made by Blackburn on the forward.
