Southend United complete the signing of ex-Ipswich Town midfielder

Southend United have signed their second player of the summer, bringing in Anthony Wordsworth on a free transfer following his release from Ipswich Town.

Wordsworth, whose family support Southend, completed the move by signing a two-year deal with the Shrimpers.

He was previously with Ipswich Town in the Championship, but he only managed to feature 18 times in the league, scoring two goals.

The creative, attacking-midfielder is best known for his time with fellow Essex team Colchester United, where he scored 35 times – including three in one season against Southend – in 199 games for the U’s.

Last season, Wordsworth played for relegated Crawley Town on loan, scoring on four occasions, whilst racking up 12 assists in 18 appearances.

The 26-year-old has also spent time on loan at Rotherham United.
