Southend make ex-Leyton Orient striker their first signing

Southend United have completed the signing of David Mooney after his contract expired with Leyton Orient.

The 30 year-old striker has signed a two-year deal with the Shrimpers, becoming their first signing of the summer.

The Irishman was a key figure for Orient where he scored 51 times in 170 games at Brisbane Road.

However, he was unable to keep the O’s up last season as they were relegated from League 1.

Mooney, speaking to the Southend United official website, admitted that staying in League 1 was one of his main reasons why he decided to join Orient’s rivals.

“I wanted to get back into League 1 and the manager is very ambitious and a real character” said Mooney shortly after he joined.

“It’s a closed book and I’ve opened a new chapter here at Southend. I hope to do well here and help the team. We have the players here to do really well in the league. We’re well organised here and the manager leaves no stone unturned.

“I work hard for the team, chase and score goals, so hopefully it can be a successful season for us.”

The experienced striker has also played for Reading, Stockport County, Norwich City, Charlton Athletic and Essex rivals Colchester United during his career.
