Leeds United announced, shortly after 9am, the signing of New Zealand international striker Chris Wood on a four-year deal for an ‘undisclosed fee’, although a figure of around £2.5m has been mooted in most circles of Leeds fans. If this is the case, then it will be the highest transfer fee Leeds United have paid since the days of signing Robbie Fowler and Nick Barmby.

Wood becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer, following Lee Erwin, Charlie Horton and Sol Bamba, as coach Uwe Rösler continues to mould the squad in his image. Speaking to the official website, Rösler said about Wood’s capture,

“I think he’s another important piece in the jigsaw. We were looking for a striker for the 2015/16 Championship season nine type – like Chris Wood is. He’s physical, strong and experienced in this league. He has potential to develop and has his best years in front of him.”

Wood had his best season in the Championship during the 2012/13 season, initially at Millwall on loan from his then parent club West Bromwich Albion. After a prolific run of goal-scoring for The Lions, Leicester snapped him up in January 2013 for their Championship campaign. All-in-all, Chris Wood made 43 appearances during the 2012/13 season and netted an impressive 22 goals.

With goals at a premium at amongst the strike-force at Elland Road, Leeds fans will be looking to Wood to provide a consistent threat in front of goal. Most hopes will be pinned on Wood to become that much-vaunted and revered 20-goals-a-season striker that underpins a serious challenge for the promotion places.
