Derby bid for experienced ex-Premier League defender

Derby County’s new boss Paul Clement hasn’t hung about since his arrival at Pride Park, having already signed Scott Carson, Alex Pearce and Darren Bent, and has now tabled a £2 million bid for 31 year-old Jason Shackell.

The towering centre-back previously played for the Rams for the 2011-12 season and Clement is keen to bring him back to Pride Park to form a partnership with newly-signed Alex Pearce at the heart of the Rams defence.

Shackell, a vastly experienced player who has amassed over 400 career games, was part of the Burnley team which got relegated last season but it was the goals column, rather than the goals conceded, which resigned the Clarets to relegation.

After starting his career with now-Premier League outfit Norwich where he spent eight years, Shackell made over 125 appearances for the Canaries as he become an integral part of their defence.

Short single-season spells at Barnsley and Derby preceded a move to his current club Burnley where he has been since 2012. Shackell was a key part of the Clarets squad which managed to attain promotion to the Premier League following their second placed finish in the 2013-14 season.
