Charlton look set to fend off Villa to sign former German U20 international

According to Portuguese site Record, Charlton Athletic are on the verge of signing C.S. Maritimo defender Patrick Bauer with the Addicks looking to add strength and depth to their defensive options ahead of the new season.

The towering centre-back is a hot prospect in Portugal and reports suggest that Aston Villa were also keen on a transfer of the 22 year-old before a deal was struck with Charlton, with a medical all that remains before the deal is complete.

Capped by Germany at U17, U18 and U20 levels, Bauer started his career with Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart, although he never made an appearances in the league and was used mostly as a cup rotation player.

After featuring for Stuttgart’s second team in the 3. Liga, Bauer was loaned out to Maritimo and spent the season playing for their second team in the Segunda Liga, scoring five times in 36 games from the back.

This move was made permanent in 2013 and, after a further season with the second team, the 6″4′ defender was promoted to the senior squad and was a prominent feature last term for the Primeira Liga side.
