Shrewsbury linked with free agent Maghoma

Following Sheffield Wednesday exodus of players earlier this month, Jacques Maghoma has found himself without a club. The Congolese midfielder appeared fifty-two times for the Owls over his two year spell at the club, Maghoma joined the Owls from Burton after a season that saw him win League Two Player of the Season. Rumours have also emerged linking Maghoma with Birmingham City; Unfortunately that move would suit Maghoma well, City manager Gary Rowett managed Maghoma back when they both were at Burton. Town will find it hard competing with City for his signature due to their league position and the history between Maghoma and Rowett.

Manager Mickey Mellon has convinced big names to come and play at the Greenhous Meadow, former Stoke midfielder Liam Lawrence dropped down the leagues to come and play under Mellon. Town will also struggle with Maghoma’s wage demands, his salary would of been large at Wednesday. This move will really come down to the club that attracts Maghoma the most, the lifestyle in Birmingham will be more attractive, the hills and fields of Shropshire don’t really compare to the shops and restaurants of Birmingham. Saying that, many Town players live close to Birmingham and seem to manage travelling down to Shropshire for training and matches.

If this rumour is true and Mellon is chasing Maghoma’s signature, it hints that Mellon is looking to alter his formation for League One. Mellon played a 5-3-2 for the majority of last season, this meant that Town never played any wingers unless the formation was altered due to injury or tactics. Shrewsbury might be adopting a more attacking formation the League One campaign with the use of wide-men, also Jordan Clark’s contract extension could also suggest this.

If this deal was to happen, it would be one of the best transfers Mellon has secured in his time at Town. Time will tell what Maghoma will do, let us hope he prefers the hills and the fields.
