Sam Slocombe Signs On At Oxford

Oxford United have finally announced the signing of goalkeeper Sam Slocombe on a two year contract. The U’s have beaten off competition from fellow League Two side York City as well as a handful of other clubs for the signature of the highly-rated net minder to make him their fourth signing of the summer so far.

Slocombe was released by Scunthorpe United at the end of the season after making over 100 appearances for ‘The Iron’ since joining them in 2008. He was an ever present in their 2013/14 League Two promotion side but only made 15 appearances last season in League One after suffering a shoulder injury early in the season and then a broken arm in January.

The 27 year-old joined his home town club Scunthorpe from non-league side Bottesford Town for a fee of £3000 at the start of the 2008/09 season. He had to be patient, making his debut over a year later before finally getting a run of games in League One for the next two seasons during which time Scunthorpe were relegated to the bottom tier of English football. It wasn’t to be for long as Slocombe featured in every game as then manager Russ Wilcox led the side straight back up at the first attempt.

The addition of Slocombe to the U’s squad means that talks have ceased with Jamie Ashdown who finished the season as The U’s number one. Slocombe will battle it out with highly rated Max Crocombe, who has had a two year extension activated, and fans favourite Ryan Clarke for the number one shirt.

On the signing of Slocombe, Head Coach Michael Appleton told the official club website:

“Sam is a proven goalkeeper at this level and above and we are delighted to have him here. He communicates with his defence and he is an excellent shot-stopper. He is still only 27 so we think there is plenty to come from him.”

Slocombe himself said that although he was dropping a division he felt that Oxford was the right place to continue his career:

“They are an ambitious club and the manager sold it to me when I came down a couple of weeks ago, it’s not just the immediate future but they want long-term success as well and that’s massive for me. Being honest, I didn’t really want to drop down a division, but there is everything in place at this club to achieve something, and I hope I can play a part in helping them do that.”

Slocombe will join up with the United squad when they return for pre-season and will join his new team mates on a training camp in Austria. The U’s will spend a week training near Vienna whilst also playing a match against SC Wiener Neustadt before returning to the UK.
