I have no doubt in my mind that Ross McCormack will be top scorer in the Championship come the end of the season. Why? Well I’ll tell you. The battle for top scorer looks to be between McCormack, Ings, Vokes and Vaughan. Ings and Vokes, Burnley’s strike force, have done very well so far this season; scoring 10 and 9 respectively. Burnley find themselves top of the league, though I do not think it will last. Every season a team you don’t expect to be up there is up there and eventually they run out of steam, finishing mid table. I believe this will be Burnley, plus with the possibility of injuries I just don’t think Vokes especially will finish top scorer.
The reason James Vaughan won’t finish top scorer is simple, Huddersfield aren’t strong enough to continue producing chances week in week out. There is another player who I think could finish top scorer, but I will get on to that later.
That leaves it down to McCormack and Ings. The reason I think Ross McCormack will finish top scorer at the end of the season is simple, Leeds haven’t even been particularly good yet this season. Leeds have had an average start to the season, winning 7, drawing 2 and losing 6. The main problem is their away form, only 2 wins away from home until last Saturday’s 4-2 victory at Charlton; thanks to Ross’ 4 goals. So when Leeds do hit top form, McCormack will be there to bang in the goals.
Ross has the amazing ability that is hard to find in a footballer, the ability to finish. Give him the ball in or around the box and he will score 9/10 times. He makes the runs that others wouldn’t even see. It’s not just about him though, it’s about the people around him. Ross seems to be gaining a good understanding with Dexter Blackstock, getting 2 assists for him against Charlton. Rodolph Austin is also an important factor; his bursting runs from midfield really seem to be helping McCormack, setting up both goals for him in the game against Yeovil.
The other player mentioned earlier who I believe could finish top scorer is Charlie Austin. He has scored 7 goals so far this season, following on from his 24 in the Championship last season. QPR have made a great start to the season and have the squad to win the league, in my opinion. If Austin goes without injury and QPR go up as expected, he has a big chance.
So, over a third of the way through the season Ross McCormack has scored the most goals and I think it will stay that way. By the end of November I am almost certain that Ross will have scored at least 2 more goals, if not 3. The home game against Middlesbrough and the trip to Blackburn provide great opportunities for goals. If he does not end up with 25 goals by the end of the season from where he is now it will probably be a disappointment.
