#RETAINED – 14 players to leave Fleetwood

Fleetwood Town have announced who they will be pushing through the exit door this summer and also who they will be keeping after releasing their retained list.

The club had a decent season, finishing in a very respectable 10th place as the season drew to a close. Now, after looking over his squad, he has released the annual retained list.

So who has he decided is no longer in his plans? Who is he keen to tie down to new deals? Which promising youth players will be offered a first pro deal?

First off, here’s what Graham Alexander had to say about the list:

“There is going to be a significant turn over in the squad over the summer. We have had to make some very difficult decisions on who we need to keep and let go. It has been a very difficult process. We have a profile of the makeup of our future squad going forward and a stronger emphasis on up and coming professionals.

There are some players that are leaving that have done a tremendous job for this Club. Everyone that is on that list has contributed to what this team has done over the last 12-24 months. We thank them all for their dedication and valuable contribution. My staff and I sincerely wish them well for where they go next.

We hope that the supporters see the new direction we are going in and how it will benefit the long term future of the Club.”

Now, let’s take a look at who he has decided to keep hold of.

Nathan Pond, who has been plying his trade for the Highbury side since 2003, has been offered a brand new deal to keep him on at the club. He has played 386 games for the Cod Army and they are hoping he can add more to that total by offering him this new contract.

Stephen Jordan has also been offered a new deal, as have Gareth Evans, Jamille Matt, Keano Deacon and Harvey Hodd. Two other players – Conor Smith and Matty Williams – will also be offered their first pro deals.

Alexander isn’t following his future plans for youngsters by hanging on to Jordan and Pond (who are aged 33 and 30 years old respectively) but it will be key to keep these experienced players, who can pass on their knowledge of the game to the youngsters and have a key role in improving on this season’s finish next year.
