Step forward Patrick Bamford – Championship POTY

*dramatic pause for effect

“Patrick Bamford”

The Chelsea 21-year old, on loan at Middlesbrough, has just been crowned the Championship Player of the Year 2014/15 after a stellar season for the Smoggies. Despite strong competition from Watford’s Troy Deeney and Ipswich’s Daryl Murphy, Bamford walked away with the accolade.

Bamford has 37 appearances under his belt (6 as a substitute) for the Teesiders and has marked 17 goals with two assists in a season that has seen Middlesbrough, despite being done a double over by my beloved Leeds United, rightly end up fighting for a spot in the upper echelons of the Championship table. The decision to award the honour to Patrick Bamford over Troy Deeney hasn’t gone down well in Watford with many of the Hornets offering their stinging rebukes, such as this by his 20-goal strike partner Odion Ighalo,

This sentiment was echoed by defender Gabriele Angella, who simply couldn’t comprehend how the award had gone to anyone other than his teammate Troy Deeney

However, whichever way that you look at it Patrick Bamford has been an invigorated and vital cog in a Middlesbrough machine that, whilst spluttering at times, has purred at others.

Congratulations Patrick Bamford, Championship Player of the Year 2014/15
