Accrington Stanley won the first title in their 49 year history as they lifted the Sky Bet League Two title.
All was needed at the start of the play was a point against an in form Lincoln City side who only needed a point to secure their place in the play-offs.
Jordan Clark netted shortly after the half an hour mark with a deft finish.
Just 10 minutes later, Accrington would have themselves a penalty. Michael Bostwick was penalised for bringing down Callum Johnson in the area.
Sky Bet League Two ‘Player of the Season’ Billy Kee stood up to take the penalty but his weak penalty was saved by Imps keeper Ryan Allsop low to the keepers right.
Stanley were able to hold on with the Imps going close on several occasions. With the pick of the Imps’ chances getting cleared off the line by scorer Clark.
Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, Accy manager John Coleman spoke of his delight to finally have clinched the title:
“We got ourselves into the position that if we didn’t do it, we’d be kicking ourselves for the rest of our lives. We had the heartache two years ago here on the last day of the season.
“We’ve come a long long way together, through the hard times and the good and we have to celebrate them and we’ve got to praise them [the players].
“What’s been most pleasing is watching other people take possession of my dream and make it their own dream and believe. We started to believe very early and that’s all down to the players.
“Our fans were magnificent. They never stopped singing all the way through the game and they deserve the party that they’re going to have tonight.”
