Sheffield Wednesday’s caretaker manager Neil Thompson spoke to the press today, ahead of his side’s weekend clash v Birmingham City.
It’s boiled down to become a huge game at the bottom of the Championship table between two historic Football League clubs.
Birmingham City sit in 23rd-place of the Championship table and Wednesday a place above them on goal difference.
But they’ve endured two contrasting seasons – Sheffield Wednesday have sacked two managers this season, finding themselves in the drop zone owing to a points deduction going into this campaign.
Birmingham City meanwhile appointed Aitor Karanka in the summer but defeat at Hillsborough tomorrow could spell the end of his tenure – he’d be the second manager to be sacked this month after defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, following in the foot steps of Bournemouth boss Jason Tindall.
Speaking to Examiner Live ahead of the clash, Thompson was questioned about Blues’ strike force of Lukas Jutkiewicz and Scott Hogan, he said of the pair respectively:
“They are good players. He’s (Jutkiewicz) a big handful. He’s a threat in the box. Scott has got good pedigree. We know all about that.”
Hogan was the only player who came out Birmingham’s defeat to Millwall last time out with any sort of praise – he’s a workhorse up top and is currently shining through in a bleak Birmingham City side.
Blues have won just one of their last 13 in the Championship and face a Wednesday side who’ve experienced an upturn in form since the turn of the year – a win could lift either side out of the bottom three.
