Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth ‘target’ could become a free agent this summer

Millwall winger Shane Ferguson’s contract is set to expire this summer and could be available for nothing.

The Northern Ireland international was subject of League One interest towards the tail end of the January transfer window.

Approaches were made for the winger, who is out of contract at the end of the season. However, a move away failed to materialise and Ferguson remained at The Den.

Reports claimed that third-tier sides Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth were both keen on the Millwall man.

Pompey were rumoured to be eyeing up a loan deal for Ferguson, while the Addicks saw a deal fail to develop into anything serious despite a late deadline day approach.

It remains unknown as to whether or not the duo are still interested in Ferguson. However, given that the former Newcastle United youngster could be available for nothing, it could prove to be a good bit of business for either of the two League One clubs.

Ferguson has been on the books at Millwall since 2015. He joined joining on loan from Newcastle, with the move being made permanent in the following transfer window.

In his stint at The Den, the 29-year-old has scored 12 goals and laid on 23 assists in a hefty 213 appearances for the club. However, he has seen his involvement decrease this season. Across all competitions, Ferguson has featured 12 times this campaign, with seven coming off the bench.

With bags of Championship pedigree under his belt, Ferguson could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for Charlton, Portsmouth, or any other potential suitors.
