‘Another run just around the corner’ – Tony Mowbray still upbeat and sets Blackburn Rovers target

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray remains confident his side will go on another unbeaten run, despite their current struggles.

Rovers suffered a third consecutive Championship defeat on Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to Barnsley at Oakwell.

They were beaten by second-half goals from Carlton Morris and Alex Mowatt, with Adam Armstrong’s goal deep in added time proving nothing more than a consolation.

That result, combined with failures against both Queens Park Rangers and Preston North End in their previous two fixtures, means Blackburn are now 10 points adrift of the play-off places in 12th spot.

Their hopes of challenging for a top six finish appear to be slipping away and Mowbray appeared dejected in front of the media after the Barnsley defeat.

However, he continued to express hope that things would turn around and that their points target for a play-off push could still be reached.

“I’ve always said that we have to just keep getting more points,” he told The72. “Last year we got 64, I’ve said we have to strive towards 70 points and generally 70-75 will get you in the play-offs. We’ve got to keep going.

“We are the team we are. With total respect, Blackburn Rovers haven’t been tearing up in the Premier League for a long time now.

“We are trying, we’re striving like every other team in the same boat. Bristol City have been striving up in the top six for the last few years and fallen away, Middlesbrough have been striving to get there and fallen away, I could reel off five or six teams for you. The inconsistency is there for all of the teams.

“Whether (it’s) the injury situation for the players because they play so many games in a short period of time, whether (it’s) the deterioration through a pretty poor winter of the pitches. You are getting inconsistency and we’re no different to the vast majority of Championship clubs.

“Most other teams are finding it difficult to keep unbeaten runs going, as we’re finding it difficult, but I’m sure there’s another unbeaten run just around the corner.

“Whether we can make it like the last one, five or six, we’ll have to try and do it a couple of times between now and the end of the season if we’re to have any chance of making the play-offs.”

With a hectic schedule over the next month, he will hope that unbeaten run comes sooner rather than later as time begins to run out.

Blackburn are back on the road on Saturday, travelling to a Nottingham Forest side still in the thick of the relegation battle.

That is followed by two consecutive matches at Ewood Park, with Rovers hosting promotion-chasing Watford in midweek before welcoming Coventry City.

The fixture list is less than kind for Blackburn in March, with Reading, Swansea City, Brentford and Norwich City’s high-flying sides all up ahead.
