4 things we learned about the Championship this weekend

4. Goals galore covering up defensive flaws at Bournemouth

JS52921363It may be all sunny for Bournemouth as the table stands and with Liverpool to visit Dean Court this week in the club’s first up League quarter-final, so some will question why focus on a potential negative. For all the good that Bournemouth have done this season and all their attacking vigour, currently the league’s top scorers, they have a deep rooted problem at the back that is being exploited week after week. The matter in question is the Cherries’ ability to deal with the ariel threat of crosses and long balls from deep. Recent matches have shown not just one or two, but over half a dozen examples of goals that have been conceded from such attacks. A further two goals this weekend against Cardiff in the second half was nearly their undoing with ever corner, free-kick, or throw-in conceded in the defensive third followed with a nervous intake of breath from fans and players alike. Eddie Howe’s side have been superb, but is no longer fair to see them as a underdog that should get off lightly from criticism. Teams are already catching onto this defensive issue and it could cost them ever more points than it has already if they do not up their game to meet the physical challenge.
