Southend 2-0 Northampto: Player Ratings and Match Report

imageSuperb Southend made it 4 on the bounce after they saw off Northampton Town at Roots Hall this afternoon. There was nearly a big bit of controversy after Northampton loanee John Joe O’Toole nearly scored after just 5 minutes against his parent club but it wasn’t until the second half when Barry Corr opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Archer who was shown red. As Northampton looked to get back into the game, David Worrall put a stop to that by calmly converting Myles Weston’s ground cross to grab his fourth goal of the season and ensure all three points were Southend’s.

Southend United

Daniel Bentley- Didn’t have a lot to do at all but did what he had to do when called upon 7.0
John White- Had a decent game, cleared the ball and made tackles when necessary, didn’t rush things, consistent throughout. 7.0
Adam Thompson- Played well in an unfamiliar position, didn’t allow the Northampton wingers much time and space 7.0
Luke Prosser- Won tackles and didn’t allow the Northampton forwards in behind him, quick to dispatch the ball and clear it. 7.0
Cian Bolger- Played well and looked solid once again, made some great tackles and cleared the ball effectively. 8.0
Michael Timlin- Consistent in the heart of midfield today, did what he had to do. 7.0
John Joe O’Toole- Did what was expected to him, no rash tackles, got stuck in and nearly scored. 6.5
Myles Weston- Didn’t have the greatest of first halfs, gave the ball away often and first touch was poor but upped his game, looked more lively in the second half and assisted the second goal. 6.5
Jack Payne- Didn’t stand out as much as he usually does but a decent performance none the less and was influential. 7.0
David Worrall- Caused the Northampton back line all sorts of problems throughout, used his pace to his advantage and got the decisive goal. 8.5
Barry Corr- Got more stuck in than usual today and was rewarded with a goal. Got frustratedly times when decisions didn’t go his way but stuck with his game. 6.5

Substitutions

Will Atkinson- Came on after the second goal had been scored, got stuck in and got back, chased the ball down when necessary. 6.0
Shaq Coulthirst- Didn’t get a lot of game time, wanted to get involved, got in good positions but failed to have a real impact on the game. 5.5
Gary Deegan- Came on with only injury time to play to act as a defensive role, dispatched the ball well and tried to start attacks. 5.0

Northampton Town

Archer- Only real save he had to make was from John Joe O’Toole in the first 5 minutes. Sending off was one he’d like to forget. 5.0
Tozer- First touch was frequently poor, was beaten too easily by his man, maybe could’ve done more to prevent second goal. 5.0
Langmead- Played like he’d never been away, made some crucial tackles 7.0
Collins- Looked very solid, stopped mostly everything. 7.0
Robertson- Didn’t really perform to his best, failed to have any real impact. 6.0
Byrom- Was playing well and picked out some good passes until he picked up an injury which forced him off. 6.0
Murdoch- Worst performance since joining the club on loan, maybe just a blip. 5.0
Ravenhill- Showed his physicality in midfield until he was sacrificed to go off after Archer’s red card. 7.0
Banks- Could’ve shown a more attacking intent but a decent debit none the less, looks as though he has more to show. 6.0
Carter- Northampton’s best player, put his body on the line at times, kept O’Toole very quiet, got everywhere in the pitch. 8.0
Richards- Frustrating day for him, marked very well by the Southend centre halfs, didn’t quite get the delivery he would’ve liked from midfield, looked isolated upfront. 6.0

Substitutions

Mohamed- Weakest performance as a Northampton player yet, never really got going, didn’t show the ‘magic’ the fans know he has got. 5.0
Hackett- Tried to get crosses in but fell short 9 times out of 10 and lacked his usual pace. 6.0
Duke- Unlucky bot to keep the penalty out, kept a few shots out, let another in. 5.0

Man of the Match

David Worrall- Caused a threat to the Northampton back line all game and got the goal which killed the game off and secured the three points. 8.5
