Five potential candidates to replace Sam Ricketts at Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town have sacked Sam Ricketts, as announced by their official club website. Here are five potential candidates for the job-

Nigel Adkins

He has emerged as an early contender for the vacant position. The experienced boss has been out of the game for over a year since leaving Hull City and could be tempted by a return the dugout now.  He has also been at Scunthorpe, Southampton and Sheffield United in the past.

Paul Hurst

The 46-year-old has unfinished business with the League One side. He guided the Shrews to the Play-Off final in 2018 before leaving for Ipswich Town that summer. The Yorkshireman has since also had a spell at Scunthorpe that was unsuccessful and may be keen on returning to familiar surroundings.

Paul Heckingbottom

The ex-Leeds United and Hibernian boss guided Barnsley to promotion to the Championship and the EFL Trophy in 2016 and is an option for Shrewsbury as they hunt for a new manager to lead them forward.

Graham Alexander

Could the Shrews hand him a swift return to management? The former Fleetwood Town and Scunthorpe man was sacked by Salford City last month, despite the club sat in the Play-Off places in League Two. He got them promoted from the National League in 2019.

Steve Cotterill

He has previously managed the likes of Cheltenham Town, Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Birmingham City and has got bags of experience in the Football League. However, he hasn’t managed since parting company with the Blues two years ago.
