Oxford United keen as Spurs plan to loan out young star

Oxford United are targeting Tottenham Hotspur forward Jamie Donley to bolster their attack, as per Give Me Sport.

Oxford United are said to be eyeing Donley with Ange Postecoglou considering allowing the Spurs prospect to leave on loan to boost his development with regular first-team minutes.

Donley has been touted for a bright future after his impressive scoring record at youth level and is attracting EFL interest.

Oxford United are heading up to the Championship following their play-off triumph, which ended with a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley.

Josh Murphy, who has since departed Oxford to join Portsmouth after rejecting a new contract, netted both goals for the U’s to seal promotion

Murphy’s departure leaves Des Buckingham hunting for some added firepower in attack and Donley could be a tidy addition to the Oxford frontline. Give Me Sport states they are among those considering a loan move for the 19-year-old.

Who is this?

A star in the making?

Donley made his first four senior appearances under Postecoglou and the former Celtic manager is not interested in allowing Donley to leave on a permanent move.

The Northern Ireland-born striker managed 34 goal contributions in 34 games in the U18 Premier League, scoring 24 times and assisting on 10 occasions. Donley also added five goal contributions in five games in the EFL Trophy, with two goals and three assists against senior opposition.

Unsurprisingly, Oxford United are not the only EFL team keeping a close eye on Donley – but their Championship status could be a huge factor in tying up a deal.

With three years still remaining on his current deal with the Lilywhites, Spurs have high hopes for Donley’s bright future.

However, with Heung-Min Son, Timo Werner and Richarlison all talented options in attack, Donley would hugely benefit from a spell in a lower tier.

Current Spurs star James Maddison made his name in the EFL for Norwich City and Coventry City before establishing himself in the top-flight, and Donley might profit from a similar move.

Current attacking options

The jump in quality from League One to the Championship can often be a significant one so it is vital that Oxford United recruit accordingly.

Mark Harris is their current number nine, with the Welsh forward scoring 15 goals in League One during 2023/24. However, Harris scored just three times in 38 matches during his previous Championship campaign with Cardiff City in 2022/23.

Overall, Donley has already proven his eye for goal at youth level and the U’s could utilise an extra spark in attack if they can complete business with Daniel Levy.

The promoted club made a quick start to adding Championship experience to their ranks, with the signing of Will Vaulks on a free transfer. Since his arrival, Jacob Knightbridge, Peter Kioso and Jamie Cumming have all joined Buckingham’s side ahead of Oxford United’s first season in the second-tier for 25 years.
