Championship club make contact over possible deal for Barnsley star

Barnsley midfielder Adam Phillips has been the subject of an enquiry from Preston North End, according to the Lancashire Post.

Barnsley will be looking to win promotion at the third time of asking next season after suffering heartbreak in the League One play-offs once again.

After being beaten by Sheffield Wednesday in the final in 2023, the Tykes were beaten by Bolton Wanderers in the semi-finals this time around. They did so under the temporary management of Martin Devaney, who replaced the sacked Neill Collins.

Now though, Darrell Clarke is at the helm, and he’s keen to shape the squad to his liking.

However, one Barnsley star who is subject of interest away from Oakwell is midfielder Adam Phillips.

The Lancashire Post reports that Championship side Preston North End have made an enquiry over a possible deal for the former Burnley man. Midfielders are on the radar at Deepdale and Barnsley man Phillips is one who could make the step up.

The 26-year-old is under contract with the League One club until 2026 with a 12-month option on top of that.

Who is this?

A key player

Phillips was vital in getting Barnsley to the play-offs, especially over the second half of the season.

From midfield, he registered 12 goals and seven assists in 47 games across all competitions. His output increased significantly after the turn of the year as he locked down a place in the starting XI and became nigh-on undroppable for the Tykes.

Operating as an attacking midfielder or in a deeper role, he was key in their progression to the play-offs and his contributions helped Barnsley gain some key results.

As such, it’s no surprise someone like Preston could look to offer him a shot in the Championship. After such a season, Phillips’ stock is high and if he wants to step up a league, you would fancy him to have plenty of opportunities to do so.

Preston’s midfield options

Preston North End are likely to pursue a couple new midfielders this summer, so it’s no surprise that Barnsley star Phillips is among those on the radar at Deepdale.

Question marks still surround the future of long-serving club captain Alan Browne. Ben Whiteman, Ali McCann and Ryan Ledson remain on the books though.

Beyond them, youngsters such as Noah Mawene and Kian Taylor may be hopeful of staking a claim for a first-team role.

Further pedigree will be wanted, and Phillips fits the mould. It remains to be seen whether he can be tempted away from Barnsley though with an enquiry lodged.
