24-year-old to join Sheffield United from Leeds United

Leeds United will see Jamie Shackleton depart at the end of his contract and now, Football Insider claims he’s agreed to join Sheffield United.

Leeds United and Sheffield United are set to battle it out in the Championship next season with both sure to set the goal of fighting for promotion to the Premier League.

The Whites fell short of an immediate return as they lost in the play-off final while the Blades suffered an immediate relegation back to the second-tier after a dismal 2023/24 campaign.

Now, it is reported that midfielder Jamie Shackleton is set to switch between the two clubs.

Football Insider reports that the versatile Leeds United academy graduate has agreed to join Sheffield United upon the expiry of his contract at Elland Road. Talks had been held over an extension but the 24-year-old is now expected to join the Blades in the coming days.

Given his age, Shackleton’s move will not cost the Bramall Lane outfit a penny. The Whites are not due any compensation despite developing him as he is now over 23.

Who is this?

Kicking on away from Elland Road

Shackleton has been a good asset for Leeds United over the years. He’s offered an energetic presence in the side when played and his versatility has seen him operate as a full-back on both sides or in midfield.

However, he has had injury problems with the Whites. That has prevented him from kicking on quite as hoped and even if he was to be fully fit going into next season, he likely wouldn’t have a starting place under Farke.

As such, it seems he’s set to move on in search of a fresh start, with Chris Wilder and Sheffield United offering him just that.

It keeps Shackleton at Championship level with an upwardly-mobile club, so it’s a good move for him. He’ll be determined to push on with the Blades and find regular football having played 15 times across all competitions last season.

A welcome addition for the Blades

As often is the case for relegated teams, Sheffield United are seeing a number of players move on.

Some are departing at the end of their deals while others are bound to be sold. It will be interesting to see where Wilder believes is Shackleton’s best position, but the areas he mainly plays in could need bolstering.

George Baldock is departing, leaving Jayden Bogle as the only natural right-back. In midfield, Vini Souza and Gustavo Hamer could draw interest while Oliver Norwood is departing, so Shackleton offers another option there too.

The departing Leeds United man can become a very useful asset for Sheffield United and if he can stay injury free, we could see Shackleton find new levels in red and white.
