Blackburn Rovers, Charlton Athletic target announces departure from relegated club

Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic target John Ruddy has announced he will be leaving Birmingham City at the end of his contract.

Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic have both been linked with John Ruddy amid questions over his future at relegated Birmingham City.

The veteran goalkeeper’s deal is up at the end of this month and while the Blues have been in talks to keep him, no resolution had been reached until now.

Ruddy has now made his decision public, confirming on Instagram that he will be leaving St. Andrew’s.

He moved to think everyone involved for making his time at Birmingham City enjoyable though admitting it didn’t end as anyone wanted with the club dropping to League One. He said:

“I would just like to say thank you.

“Thank you to all of you bluenoses that made me and my family feel so welcome at your wonderful club over the last two years.

“It didn’t end as any of us wanted to but I hope the one thing that you can say about me was I gave everything every time I pulled the shirt on. Sometimes it was enough and other times it wasn’t to be but it was a genuine privilege to play for your club.

“I wish the players, staff and fans nothing but success and as I’ve said previously I believe the club will get to where they want and should be!

“Good luck and thank you again. John and family.”

With Ruddy announcing his exit, it means he’ll be free to make his next move as a free agent. That is sure to pique the interests of Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic, with the latter recently said to have opened talks with the former Norwich City and Wolves shot-stopper.

Who is this?

The next move

With it now confirmed that Ruddy will not be staying at Birmingham City and will enter free agency, the focus now turns to seeing just where the 37-year-old ends up next.

He displayed with the Blues that he can still be a solid ‘keeper at Championship level but links with Charlton Athletic may pave the way for him to remain number one.

Meanwhile, at Blackburn Rovers, both Aynsley Pears and Leopold Wahlstedt are on the books. It means there would be a strong fight for the starting, so perhaps a club where minutes are more likely would be his preference.

Either way, whoever brings him in will be getting a solid goalkeeper on the cheap. Even if he might not be a particularly long-term option, Ruddy’s vast experience and leadership will make him a valuable addition to any dressing room.

The focus for the Blues

As Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic target Ruddy weighs up his next move, Birmingham City will turn their attention to bringing in another new shot-stopper as his replacement.

The confirmation of his exit means the Blues now lose both him and Neil Etheridge, who served s Ruddy’s backup for much of the 2023/24 season.

Ryan Allsop has already joined the League One club but this exit means another ‘keeper will be sought.

While giving new boss Chris Davies a bit of a headache, it offers him the chance to really revamp his goalkeeping ranks before embarking on the new campaign with the club.
