Watford midfielder reaches agreement to sign for Ligue 1 club

Watford midfielder Ismael Kone has reached an agreement to move to Marseille this summer, as per Foot Mercato (via Sport Witness).

Watford are gearing up for another season in the Championship.

The Hornets are now under the watchful eye of Tom Cleverley as he steps foot in professional management for the first time in his career.

Kone, 22, has been a consistent part of Watford’s plans since joining from the MLS in 2023.

He has racked up eight goal contributions in 63 outings for the club and his performances have quite often been a cut above Championship level.

West Ham were linked with Kone earlier this week, however Marseille were said to be keen in a new update yesterday.

Now, reports from France claim both clubs have reached a full agreement with Kone also agreeing personal terms with the Ligue 1 outfit.

Who is this?

A big loss

It seems a move away from Vicarage Road is inevitable now and Kone will be a big loss to Watford this season.

He is currently on international duty with Canada and whilst that may delay any announcement, it doesn’t seem as if it has halted negotiations.

Roberto De Zerbi is the new boss at Marseille and his particular way of playing will allow Kone to really express himself and it seems as if this transfer could be perfect for the player.

Looking ahead

Watford have to improve on last season.

Cleverley will need patience from the fans and those above him in order to settle into the new role, but the Hornets will not want to spend another season in the bottom half of the second tier.

Ultimately, the club will want to earn promotion back to the Premier League again soon and whilst that may not happen this year if they can take one step closer to that being the case then they can class it as a successful campaign.
