Announcement awaits as Portsmouth seal vital player agreement

Portsmouth captain Marlon Pack has penned a two-year deal and an announcement will follow in the next day or so, reporter Andrew Moon has said.

Portsmouth have had hometown midfielder Pack back on the books since the summer of 2022.

He returned to Fratton Park on a two-year deal 11 years after leaving the club for Cheltenham Town. Upon his Pompey reunion, Pack quickly became a fan favourite and one of their most important players.

The 33-year-old played 39 times across all competitions in the 2023/24 season, chipping in with three goals and nine assists as he captained the club to the League One title.

There have been doubts over his future with his deal up this summer though. Reports said he was expected to pen terms but the expiry date has moved closer and closer with no announcement made.

Now though, writing on X, reporter Andrew Moon states a two-year deal has been agreed between Pack and Portsmouth. As such, an announcement is due in the next day or so.

It will keep Pack at Fratton Park until 2026, taking his second spell at the club to four years.

Who is this?

A crucial deal

There can be no hyperbole when highlighting how important Pack has become since making his return to Portsmouth two years ago.

The experience and leadership he offers in the middle of the park is just about unmatched and it makes him highly influential on and off the pitch. Pack sets the standard in terms of work ethic and is regularly barking orders to his teammates during games.

Not only that though, but Pack has proven himself as one of Mousinho’s standout players too.

He’s a composed presence on the ball and his eye for a long ball causes plenty of headaches. Pack has registered a solid number of assists since his return, highlighting his creativity from deep.

Many would have felt like keeping him was a formality but as time passed and some surprising decisions were made, it didn’t quite feel guaranteed. Now though, it seems it’s a matter of announcing the deal.

Kicking on in the Championship

Having enjoyed such a strong season in League One, Portsmouth should be well-equipped to look upwards upon their return to Championship football too.

Ipswich Town’s huge success last season might be tough to replicate. However, simply staying up like Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle and maintaining second-tier status will be the minimum goal for Pompey.

Keeping someone like Pack will be key in their efforts to achieve that feat, though replacing influential loan players and bolstering light areas of the squad is a must for Portsmouth as well.
