Notts County boss Stuart Maynard has said his side beat off a ‘lot of interest’ to sign Matty Platt from Bradford City.

Notts County made the defender their first signing of this summer after he joined on a free transfer. He penned a two-year contract with the Magpies.

Platt, 26, was offered a new deal by Bradford City, as detailed on their retained list, but opted to leave for a new challenge at Meadow Lane.

Maynard has said, as per a report by NottinghamshireLive:“There was a lot of other interest for him [Matty Platt], which we knew there would be because we feel he is one of the most dominant centre-halves in the division and we know his technical ability is very high.

“He’s a very good footballer as well as being able to defend his box and that is something that he hasn’t really shown in the last few years. His defensive qualities have come on leaps and bounds and he is someone we are really looking forward to working with.”

Who is this?

Notts County saw off interest

Platt is a shrewd signing by Notts County and will bolster their backline.

Their defence was way too weak last season and he will look to reduce the amount of goals that they concede.

Bradford City signed him back in 2022 from Barrow and he has been a regular for the Yorkshire outfit over the past two years.

He made 89 appearances in all competitions for the Bantams and chipped in with three goals and two assists.

Platt started his career at Blackburn Rovers and rose up through the academy of the Championship side.

He went on to play five times for their first-team and was also shipped out on loan at Accrington Stanley and Southport to get some experience under his belt.

Barrow landed him on a temporary basis during the 2019/20 season and he helped them win promotion to the fourth tier under their former boss Ian Evatt before the Cumbrian side made his move permanent that summer.

Bradford City then handed him a two-year deal but he decided to leave for Notts County.

What next?

Platt will be looking to show what he can do over the course of pre-season.

The Magpies will be aiming for promotion but need to ensure that they keep hold of key striker Macaulay Langstaff. He has been named as their captain for next term.
