Free agent signs for new team following Grimsby Town departure

Newport County have signed Anthony Glennon following his exit from Grimsby Town, as announced by their official club website.

Newport County have snapped up the defender on a free transfer as they prepare for another year in League Two. They are currently in the hunt for a new manager after deciding to part ways with Graham Coughlan last week.

Glennon, 24, cut ties with fellow fourth tier outfit following the end of last season and he has since been weighing up his options as a free agent.

He has now joined the Exiles and has told their website: “I’m delighted to get going. It’s a deal that’s been in the making for a long time.

“I spoke with Huw (Jenkins) and It was something that I was interested in right from the start, and I’m just buzzing that the deal is over the line now. I want to play every game, get into good form and hopefully help the team have a good season.

New home for departed Grimsby Town man

He also had a loan spell at Blundell Park back in 2020 and played 12 times for them.

The left-back started his career in the academies at Liverpool and Burnley.

As well as his stint with Grimsby Town, he also joined Barrow on a temporary basis from the Clarets to get some experience before heading out the exit door on a permanent basis.

Glennon has now linked up with Newport County on a two-year deal and will be pleased to have fixed himself up a new home in time for pre-season. The Welsh outfit have a big decision to make on who to bring in as their next manager.

Grimsby Town exit

Grimsby Town made the tough decision not to hand him an extension as they prepare for their first full season under ex-Crewe Alexandra man David Artell.

Glennon wasn’t the only player to be released by the Mariners. Harvey Tomlinson, Edwin Essel, Aaron Braithwaite, Jamie Bramwell, Niall Maher, Abo Eisa, Arthur Gnahoua, Gavan Holohan, Otis Khan and Danny Amos also departed.
