Charlton Athletic register interest in swoop for Ipswich Town fringe man

Charlton Athletic have shown an interest in signing Ipswich Town striker Gassan Ahadme, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones will be keen to make the most of his first transfer window at The Valley after taking over as boss in February of this year.

He has impressed with the Addicks so far, leading them away from the relegation fight to safety over the remainder of the 2023/24 season. Now, the focus turns to looking further up the League One table.

Numerous players have been linked with the South Londoners and a few have already come through the door.

As they look to push on, Charlton Athletic are now rumoured to be eyeing Ipswich Town striker Gassan Ahadme. That’s according to the East Anglian Daily Times, who state the Moroccan is poised for a permanent exit following the Tractor Boys’ promotion.

The Addicks have registered their interest in Ahadme, who managed 13 goals in 33 games last season while on loan at relegation-threatened Cambridge United.

Ahadme has a year left on his Town deal, so a fee will be required to sign him. There are also other clubs keen, though they are not named.

Who is this?

Ready for a move

Ahadme was signed by Ipswich Town in the summer of 2022 following a strong stint at Burton Albion but a matter of months later, he returned to the Brewers on loan for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

Another loan with the earlier mentioned Cambridge followed as Ahadme struggled to break into the Ipswich side and now they’ve been promoted, it seems highly unlikely that he has a future there.

League One is a level the 23-year-old has found success at before, so it would not be a surprise if he was to head back there this summer.

His form in the third-tier looks to have piqued the interests of Charlton Athletic. Ahadme has 18 goals to his name in 67 League One games and with a permanent move, he may really kick on and maximise his potential.

Strikers on the radar

The striker department may well end up being one of focus for Charlton Athletic this summer.

Connor Wickham is departing, leaving Chuks Aneke, Miles Leaburn, Daniel Kanu and Alfie May as options up top. That is a strong and well-stocked striker department, but the latter is drawing interest.

Aneke has had injury problems too, so it could be that another talisman is needed by Jones and co.

If May is to depart, it may actually be easier and cheaper replacing his goals by bringing in two solid strikers rather than resting the hopes on one new talisman to take the reins. That said, fit again Aneke and Leaburn will be assets as Kanu continues to develop.
