Fresh claims emerge over Birmingham City’s potential swoop for Plymouth Argyle man

Birmingham City are not targeting Plymouth Argyle centre-back Dan Scarr, a report from Birmingham Live has said.

Birmingham City will have lofty aims for next season after a thoroughly disappointing 2023/24.

The Blues suffered a shock relegation and have now set the task of bouncing straight back to the Championship. After the confirmation that Tony Mowbray would not be staying on, Chris Davies was named as the new boss following an extensive search.

The focus now turns to signing fresh faces, and several players have already been linked.

One man rumoured to have been on the Birmingham City radar is centre-back Dan Scarr, who is currently on the books at Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle. However, new claims have now emerged over those links.

Birmingham Live states that Scarr is not someone currently being eyed by the Blues.

The 29-year-old was on the books at St. Andrew’s for two years from 2017 to 2019, but a reunion not on the club’s agenda at this stage, the report says.

Who is this?

Scarr’s position at Argyle

The last year has been a challenging one for Scarr at times and as he enters the last year of his contract, it will be interesting to see if the door opens for him to head for pastures new.

The towering defender was key in getting Plymouth Argyle to the Championship but as they fought with Birmingham City for survival, Scarr lost his place in the team under Ian Foster.

He would reclaim his place under the temporary lead of Neil Dewsnip and his role may well be in the mind of new boss Rooney. Scarr is a powerful presence at the back and a real leader, so he could become an asset at Home Park once more.

If that isn’t the case though, it could be that the door opens for him to move on before Plymouth risk losing him for nothing this time next year.

Centre-backs on the radar?

While Scarr may not be a target for Birmingham City, it would not be a surprise if they are in the market for some new options at the back this summer.

As loans end and deals expire, they will be left with just Dion Sanderson as senior centre-back options as it stands. That leaves a huge gap in Davies’ Blues squad, so expect a few to be targeted.

Someone of Scarr’s experience and pedigree would be of great value. As touched on before, he’s a League One title winner with Plymouth, so that could make him influential.

Nevertheless, it seems he’s not on the radar. It will be intriguing to see just who Davies lines up with the backline sure to be an area of focus.
