Middlesbrough striker Ajay Matthews is wanted by a host of top tier clubs this summer, as per The Secret Scout.

Middlesbrough are gearing up for another season fighting for a spot in the Championship’s top six.

Boro narrowly missed out on a play-off position last season finishing four points outside the top six last time around. In the season before Michael Carrick’s side did finish inside the top six but failed to get promoted.

Matthews, 18, made 12 appearances in the Premier League 2 for Boro last season. He scored four and assisted twice for the U21.

Before that the young striker spent time with Middlesbrough’s U18 where he scored 11 league goals and got three assists in 19 league outings since 2022.

Now, a host of top tier clubs have held discussions over signing Matthews. Celtic, Southampton, Rangers, Newcastle United, Brighton and Brentford have all been named.

Who is this?

Destined for the top

The 18-year-old has impressed in Boro’s academy in recent times and the interest from above shows he is clearly destined for the top one day.

However, it remains to be seen which direction he takes this summer.

If Carrick can offer him more time in Boro’s first team then it may be sensible for him to spend a year consistently in the Championship.

But he does have just one year left on his Teesside contract and Boro risk losing him on a free should they not sell him this summer.

Building the foundation

Carrick has done well since moving to the Riverside Stadium.

He has adapted to management with ease and has had his side fighting consistently for a spot in the top six.

He was rewarded with a new contract earlier this summer and the club clearly have faith in him to take the club back to the top flight.

This summer is huge for the club though. Boro were so close last season and if they make the right moves then they should be back in the play-offs as a minimum this season.

It will be interesting to see how Middlesbrough do and whether Matthews remains at the club past this summer transfer window.
