Leeds United are reportedly eyeing a move for FC Basel attacker Liam Millar this summer, as per The Athletic.

Leeds United are gearing up for another season in the Championship next year.

Daniel Farke’s side narrowly missed out on promotion losing in the play-off final to Southampton in May.

They will be joined by Sheffield United who got relegated from the Premier League last season. The Blades finished bottom of the top flight and Chris Wilder is now tasked with competing in the second tier once again.

Millar, 24, scored five and assisted five in 35 Championship outings for Preston North End last season. He spent the year on loan at Deepdale having failed to make an impact in Switzerland during the 2022/23 season.

The Canadian international looks set to move back to England this summer. Reports suggested Sheffield United had won the race, beating Preston North End and Sunderland to a permanent move. However, contrasting reports suggest a deal isn’t yet done and Leeds United are considering a move this summer.

Who is this?

Fierce competition

All four clubs are playing in the same division next season, but some may have an advantage over others when it comes to a competitive deal.

Sunderland finished 16th last season. Regis Le Bris has just been announced as their new head coach but there is still a lot of work to do this summer to get Sunderland back competing for the top six spots.

Preston North End are in a similar position. They finished 10th and whilst they weren’t too far off the top six they are less likely to achieve promotion than some of their competition in this race. However, the fact Millar has already been at the club may give them an edge.

Leeds United will be gunning for promotion. Farke’s side won’t want to leave this one down to the play-offs and their aim will be top two. Leeds United are also expected to lose some of their key players in forward areas this summer and therefore they will need replacements so they may be able to offer Millar good game time and the prospect of top flight football.

The Blades will be in or around the top six, but it seems less likely that they make an immediate Premier League return than their competitors in Burnley and Luton Town. Wilder has to stabilise the club first and that may mean a season with no top six before they then look to kick on.

Room to improve

The 24-year-old came through the ranks at Liverpool’s academy and got his first loan move to League One with Charlton Athletic in 2020.

Millar then moved to FC Basel but that hasn’t really worked for him and he could do with moving back to England on a permanent basis to allow him to settle down and focus on his football.

He is a more than capable Championship level player with room and time left to improve. It’s no real surprise the competition for his signature is so hot this summer, and it will be interesting to see who manages to win this race.
