Everton eye new Leeds United swoop amid Jack Harrison rumours

Leeds United talent Wilfried Gnonto is back on the Everton radar this summer, a report from Football Insider has claimed.

Leeds United saw plenty of speculation circulate over the future of Italian attacker Gnonto last summer following their relegation from the Premier League.

A move never materialised, but that wasn’t without Gnonto removing himself from contention for matchday selection in a bid to force a move away from Elland Road upon their drop to the Championship. That came amid a rejected bid from Everton.

He would work his way back into Daniel Farke’s side but following the Whites’ failure win promotion back to the top-flight, rumours of an exit are emerging once more.

Now, Football Insider claims that previous admirers Everton are back on Gnonto’s trail.

They state that the attacker is the latest Leeds United player on the radar at Goodison Park amid rumours of a new loan deal for winger Jack Harrison. The Toffees are now ‘readying an approach’ for Gnonto, who wants to return to the Premier League.

Who is this?

On the move?

Leeds United fought to retain Gnonto last summer. He had emerged as a top talent in their last season of Premier League football and could have been a real asset in the Championship.

There were bright moments later in the second-tier campaign, but the summer saga meant he had to wait to regain his starting spot. As such, he didn’t quite have the impact many expected of him last season.

Now, with the Whites needing to raise funds from player sales, they may not stand in Gnonto’s way if someone like Everton comes back in for him.

His stock was higher last summer, so Leeds United may not get quite as much as they could have for him. Nevertheless, a move for Gnonto would put a decent dent in the £190m they need to settle on outstanding transfer instalments.

A busy summer ahead

It remains to be seen just how many players need to be sold to raise funds. However, many of the biggest Leeds United assets are attacking players.

As such, the attack that was so potent for them last season could be broken up somewhat. Gnonto – albeit not always as a starter – was an influential part of that dangerous frontline.

If key players like Gnonto, Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter are to be prized away, the Whites will have the tough task of finding replacements in shrewd deals.

It’s sure to be a challenging few months at Elland Road, but the club will be hoping they can still come out of it with a squad strong enough to fight for automatic promotion to the Premier League once again.
