Burnley managerial candidate’s move to Manchester United advancing fast

Burnley target Ruud van Nistelrooy’s move to join Manchester United is ‘advancing fast’, reporter Fabrizio Romano has said on X.

Burnley have been on the hunt for a new boss for a little while now.

They saw Vincent Kompany complete a shock move to Bayern Munich in late May and speculation has been rife over who could take the reins heading into another new chapter at Turf Moor.

One name who has popped up in reports is that of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has been out of the dugout since leaving Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in 2023. At the weekend, it was revealed by Fabrizio Romano that he had been offered a place in Erik ten Hag’s backroom team at Manchester United though amid strong interest from Burnley.

Now though, it seems the Clarets may have to cross his name off their shortlist.

Again reported by Romano, it is said that van Nistelrooy’s return to Old Trafford is ‘advancing fast’.

After being backed by the new Manchester United hierarchy, ten Hag looks set to shuffle his backroom team. Van Nistelrooy may well be on the way in, which would in turn end any chances of him taking the Burnley job.

Who is this?

Time will tell

It remains to be seen just what decision van Nistelrooy comes to as he looks set to return to the dugout.

A romantic reunion with former club Manchester United under a top Dutch manager will be attractive for obvious reasons. However, the opportunity to be the lead man again after his success with PSV could be alluring, and that may be on offer at Burnley.

At the moment though, it looks as though things are moving towards the Dutchman joining the Red Devils.

It would be a blow for the Clarets to have an eye-catching managerial candidate taken off the market and crossed off the shortlist, but hopefully there are other options in mind with an appointment needed sooner rather than later.

Clarity needed

Clubs are starting to bring their players back for early pre-season training but as it stands, Burnley still don’t have a new boss in place. Of course, there are coaches in place to lead them in the time being, but it doesn’t provide any clarity or certainty over what the direction is.

Getting a new manager in place sooner rather than later allows them to assess their squad and for the players to learn the ways of their fresh leadership.

It will aid them in gearing up for a Championship promotion push while also ensuring they lose as little ground as possible in the transfer market too.

Hopefully, a breakthrough isn’t too far away, but van Nistelrooy may be one to cross off the list of targets.
