Sunderland ace emerges on radar of Southampton

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has emerged on the radar of Southampton, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Sunderland could face a battle to keep hold of their number one this summer with the transfer window now open for business. He has been their first choice between the sticks over the past few years.

Patterson, 24, has risen up through the academy ranks of the Black Cats and was a regular for them at various different youth levels, as well as having a loan spell away at Notts County to get some experience under his belt. He has now made 123 appearances for the North East outfit in all competitions to date, 46 of which came last season.

In this latest update regarding his future by journalist Nixon on his Patreon page, Southampton have identified him as a potential goalkeeping target. The Saints are back in the Premier League following their play-off final win at Wembley over Leeds United.

Who is this?

Sunderland ace eyed

Sunderland won’t want to lose Patterson as he is a valuable member of their first-team squad.

He broke into their first-team back in 2021 and hasn’t looked back since.

Sheffield United have also been linked with a swoop for him over recent times following their relegation from the top flight, as per a report by The Sun, but it remains to be seen whether the Blades will launch a swoop.

Patterson is under contract until June 2028 so Sunderland are under no pressure at all to cash in on him anytime soon and can wait for the right bid to arrive if they are to consider letting him leave.

The North Shields-born man penned an extension as recently as 2022 to fend off potential interest from other teams.

He was handed his debut back in 2020 in an EFL Trophy clash against Fleetwood Town and helped them win promotion from League One a couple of years ago now under former boss Tony Mowbray.

What next for Sunderland man?

Time will tell whether Southampton make a move for Patterson. It may depend on what happens with the injured Gavin Bazuna.

Sunderland will be hoping that they can retain his services for another 12 months at least.
