Free agent signs for League One side after West Brom exit

Peterborough United have signed Jenson Sumnall following his West Brom departure, as announced by their official club website.

Peterborough United have decided to sign the defender on a free transfer. He has penned a one-year deal with the League One side, with the club holding the option for a further 12 months on top of that.

Sumnall, 18, wasn’t offered another contract by West Brom following the end of last season and has been allowed to move on as a free agent.

He has said, as per the Posh’s website: “I’m over the moon to be joining such a prestigious club.

“I have been made to feel very welcome, having spent two years at West Brom I feel I have developed well as a player and off the pitch too, so I am ready to kick on here at Posh.

“If you look at the Club’s record of progressing players through, it’s really good and ultimately why I am here. When you see young players like Ronnie Edwards playing first team football it is exciting, it’s what I aspire to do.”

He will initially link up with the Posh’s Under-21’s side with a view to breaking into their first-team in the future.

Sumnall started out in non-league with Southern League Central Premier Division side Stourbridge before West Brom signed him in 2022.

The centre-back played for the Baggies’ Under-18’s last term and has now departed for a new chapter at London Road.

West Brom exits

Sumnall wasn’t the only player to leave West Brom when they published their retained list.

Matty Phillips, Adam Reach, Nathaniel Chalobah, Erik Pieters, Yann M’Vila, Martin Kelly, Jovan Malcolm, Jamie Andrews, Bradley Foster, Aaron Harper-Bailey, Narel Phillips, Ruben Shakpoke and Cheick Kone have also left the Baggies.

The exits have freed up space and funds for Carlos Corberan to bring in some new faces.
