Sunderland: French boss keen to join Sunderland, in advanced talks

Sunderland appear to have found their man with Regis Le Bris keen to join Sunderland after leaving Lorient yesterday, as per Sacha Tavolieri.

Sunderland are over 120 days in to their search for Michael Beale’s permanent replacement with many names having come and gone over the past couple of months.

The Black Cats appear to have struggled to nail down a target, but now it appears that has all changed.

Le Bris, 48, is the manager of Lorient in France. It was reported yesterday that following their relegation from Ligue 1, it was expected that Le Bris would resign.

It has now been claimed by Belgian reporter Tavolieri that Le Bris is keen on a switch to Sunderland with talks already at an advanced stage.

Who is this?

The right man?

Le Bris has been in charge of Lorient since 2022. He was appointed almost two years ago to the day and has managed 76 games for the French club, winning 23 of them.

The 48-year-old had a short playing career, but has only had one managerial job spending most of his time in France’s top tier.

Le Bris finished 10th with Lorient in his first season with the club, one place higher than Will Still’s Stade de Reims.

However, last season Lorient finished inside the relegation zone and will be playing second tier football next season.

No room for error

The Sunderland hierarchy really cannot afford to get this one wrong.

Le Bris will be unknown to many Sunderland fans, and it’s fair to say his CV won’t really excite them from the off. Therefore it is crucial the Frenchman wins over the Mackems as soon as possible and hits the ground running should this deal be finalised.

It will be a welcomed end to the managerial saga though and now Sunderland fans will be hoping they can focus on player recruitment and preparing for the season ahead.

It will be Le Bris’ first taste of English football and it will be interesting to see how he adapts. The expectation will be high and the pressure will be on as another bottom half Championship campaign will not be accepted by the fanbase.
