Middlesbrough coach set to leave to join Kompany’s Bayern Munich

Middlesbrough coach Aaron Danks is set to join Bayern Munich as their new assistant this week, as per Phillipp Kessler.

Middlesbrough are gearing up for another season in the Championship.

Michael Carrick’s side finished 8th last season, falling four points short of a top six finish.

It was the second season in a row under Carrick where Boro really challenged for a play-off spot, and after signing a contract extension on Teesside earlier this summer, Carrick will be hoping to make it three from three this year.

Danks joined Boro as a coach after working with Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht and Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa.

Reports broke suggesting Kompany wanted to reunite with Danks in Germany, but there had been no official approach until now.

German reporter Kessler claims that approach has now come and Danks is set to join Bayern Munich next week.

Who is this?

A big loss

Carrick is losing a good coach from his backroom team here and whilst it shouldn’t be a huge cause for concern for Middlesbrough, Danks will need replacing and it will be interesting to see which avenue Boro go down.

They could promote from within or Carrick could delve into his contact book, but whoever it is that comes in must know Carrick’s style and be able to work the same way as him to ensure maximum cohesion on the training pitch.

Danks was very unlikely to ever turn down the opportunity to work for one of the biggest clubs in the world and whilst losing him is inevitable, Boro can take promise from the fact they appointed him in the first place.

Moving on

The objective stays the same. Boro must keep themselves in the top six race this season and ensure they start the season on the front foot which is something they have struggled to do in each of the past two campaigns.

If they can hit the ground running and avoid playing catch-up then Carrick’s side are much more likely to get over the line come May next year.

The summer transfer window is just getting going, and whilst it is still only a week old, Boro have already made moves.

MLS midfielder Aidan Morris is expected to join Middlesbrough next week and it will be hoped they continue to strengthen and make full use of their resources this summer.
