Burnley closing in on appointing former PSV boss to replace Vincent Kompany

Burnley are closing in on the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy to replace Vincent Kompany this summer, as per Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

Burnley are preparing for life back in the Championship following relegation last season.

The Clarets struggled to adapt at first to the demands of the Premier League and by the time they found a run of form it was too late.

Vincent Kompany departed Burnley earlier this summer to replace Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich, and the Clarets are still searching for his replacement.

Liam Rosenior, Frank Lampard, Scott Parker and Craig Bellamy have all been named by Alan Nixon as coaches on Burnley’s radar.

However, Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri reported yesterday that Burnley want a big name to replace Kompany and it has subsequently been reported that Van Nistelrooy is nearing an agreement.

Who is this?

A strong appointment

Van Nistelrooy began his management career with Jong PSV, where he took charge of 38 games. He won 11 of those before getting the job at PSV Eindhoven.

He spent 51 games with the Eredivisie side, losing just eight times in just over a year at the helm, winning over 60% of his games and after spending more than a year unemployed, a return to the touchline appears to be on the cards.

The former Manchester United attacker was a big name player in England back in the day, but he is yet to test himself as a manager in England.

He has spent time as assistant to the Netherlands international side as well, so he shouldn’t be bothered much by the Championship challenge.

Hitting the ground running

Burnley ran away with the second tier title the last time they were in the division.

Kompany did well, but ultimately it was short-term success over long-term stability and that is something that Burnley will have to learn from this time around.

The Championship is always a competitive league and starting strong can set you on the right path to success.

Pre-season isn’t too far away though and it will be hoped the Clarets make a decision soon to ensure the new boss can settle into his new job before getting onto the grass and getting to work.
