Burnley have joined Coventry City and Preston North End in the race to sign Belgian right back Ilay Camara, as per Sacha Tavolieri.

All three clubs are gearing up for a campaign in the Championship. Burnley suffered relegation last time around failing to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. They remain without a manager following Vincent Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich.

Coventry City reached the FA Cup semi final last season, but a poor end to the league campaign saw them drift away from the top six. Preston North End suffered a similar fate. Losing their last five games led to them finishing ten points outside of the play-offs.

Camara, 21, spent last season in Belgium’s top division. He made 31 appearances for RWD Molenbeek, scoring three and assisting seven goals across all competitions.

The versatile full back can also play higher up on the wing and his impressive performances have attracted interest. First, it was the Lilywhites and Sky Blues named as sides monitoring him.

However, an update from Belgian reporter Tavolieri has claimed Burnley and Ligue 1 club Stade de Reims are also eyeing a summer swoop for the youngster.

Who is this?

A fierce race

Reims have an advantage neither of the three Championship sides can offer at the moment and that is top flight football.

The French club finished mid-table last season, but flirted with the European spots and that may be enough to tempt Camara this summer.

However, Burnley may be able to attract the 21-year-old with the prospect of an immediate return to the Premier League this season and whilst Coventry City and Preston North End may also be competing for the top six, as things stand Burnley are the side most likely to get over the line.

It is still early days in the transfer window, but this is certainly one to keep an eye on as the weeks pass by.

Top six push

Coventry City are on an upwards trajectory under Mark Robins and it would be no surprise to see them in play-off contention once again this season.

Preston North End arguably have a bit more work to do, but they never seem to be miles away from the top six and should they get their summer business right then they could put themselves right in the mix.

The Clarets are still waiting to see who replaces Kompany, and it will be interesting to see who they trust to take over. Hitting the ground running will be key for whoever steps up as a top two spot will be on the minds of many at Turf Moor.
